This lock is quite unusual in several respects. It is solid brass which would indicate that it was originally intended for an entry (exterior) or marine (a yacht perhaps?) use. It also has a very unique method of attaching the doorknobs without the use of set screws – very classy! As you can see from the photos the construction is simple with fine elegant detail. The brass knob for the lock side has very nice mushroom shape that fits the lock precisely (and a huge dent in the center!). The wood knob for the other side of the door has very fine metal work and a matching wood/brass rosette. I’m not certain of the exact age of this lock but would suspect around 1920 - 1940. It is marked N FRAMSEY & CO (N F RAMSEY?) and NEWCASTLE ??, ???? (can’t read the last 6 letters) on the front.
This lock is not reversible and would be for a left hand swing door only. The lock has not been cleaned and retains its original patina. I’ve dusted the inside of the lock and checked to be sure it works well and all the parts are in good order. The lock sits flat against the door with a curved overhang at the door edge. As noted above there is a large dent in the brass knob. The wood (mahogany, walnut, teak?) knob and rosette show normal wear for old vintage hardware. There is no key included but I will guarantee that the deadbolt is in good working order. A locksmith that handles skeleton keys should be able to provide one. There is no keeper or strike plate included.
Lock: 5-3/4” wide x 4-1/8” tall (overall dimensions)
Rosette: 2-1/4” diameter
Doorknobs: 2-1/8” diameter
