This is an iron split spindle that allows the doorknobs on either side of a door to turn independently. Although most frequently used for entry door mortise locks it can also be used for standard mortise locks without a split cam. These spindles are made for doorknobs with an interior tab that fits in the groove on the spindle. One doorknob would be pinned to the spindle and the pin is held in place by the collar of the rosette. The other doorknob has a set screw that presses down on the 3 part section creating pressure so the doorknob will not come off. I’ve included a photo of what the inside of the doorknob shaft for these spindles looks like.
3/8” square x 4-1/2” long
