Restored Moorish Antique 1870s Sargent Chain Door Bolt

With picketing along the sides and Moorish detail on a fine stippled background this bolt is stunning from any angle! Made of heavy cast iron with a steel chain and ring, it’s sure to be around for another hundred years!

The bolt was made by Sargent & Co. and bears a patent date of Apr 23, 187? on the back. The catch is not original to this bolt but is from the same time period and, although plain in design, matches up very nicely. There is a bit of the original black paint remaining on the back of the catch. I’ve taken the bolt apart and removed any old paint and rust with a clear lacquer coating on all parts (including catch and chain) to protect it and bring out the detail.

These bolts were used to secure the stationary half of a double door at the top. The bolt is spring loaded and is pulled down by the chain to release the door.
