No, I didn’t misspell “electric”. The name of the manufacturer and Pat Dec 14, 1886 are cast onto the sides of the doorbell button plate (see photos). It’s done so nicely that it seems to be part of the design! All major parts in this set are constructed of solid cast iron with some of the original copper wash still visible. The result is a lovely two tone effect.

This is the most unusual antique doorbell I’ve ever seen. The bell works with a spring and plunger mechanism and what makes it extremely rare is that all the parts are still there! The bronze button has a few dents and the interior form has been replaced along the way but these are extremely minor items that don’t show.

This antique doorbell is meant to be mounted on the door with the button on the exterior and the bell inside. The plunger allows for a door thickness of 2”. If your door is thinner you can easily cut the rod since it isn’t permanently attached. When you are looking at your door to see if this doorbell will fit please keep in mind that, like many antique doorbells, the button and bell do not line up center-to-center.

Bell assembly 3-5/8” diameter
Push button plate 3-5/8” x 2-1/8”
