This antique set is for those who want a silver rather than brass color for their historic home. The sparkling door knobs have a rare swirled glass pattern with bright silver mercury centers. The shafts are nickel to go with the fancy polished cast iron door plates. The set is completed with a narrow backset mortise lock, strike plate, skeleton key and matching mounting screws. The key alone is a collector item being marked PAT MAY 15, 88 (patented May 15, 1888) on one side and signed by Sargent & Co. on the other. How about hanging the key next to the door as a working dιcor touch? I can also see this set for a powder room or screen door!

I’ve polished the fancy cast iron door plates so the high portions are a silver color with the background remaining dark so the details just pop out. The door knobs are ever so slightly different but you would be hard pressed to notice once they are installed. One flat portion on the top is ever so slightly smaller than the other and one appears more yellow when they are next to each other. Frankly I didn’t notice myself until I took a photo on stark white poster board with them next to each other. On opposite sides of the door you would not be able to see it. As happens during use one nickel shaft has more shine than the other. There is not a single flea bite or scratch on either knob.

The narrow mortise lock with its 1-3/16” backset is perfect for a French door or any door with a narrow stile (although it will certainly work on other sizes). The lock is made of cast iron with a dark steel face plate. It has been taken apart, cleaned and operates perfectly. It is reversible for a right or left hand door. Just open the casing and flip the strike over. The black powder coated strike plate is new.

Note: I have an annotated photo of the door plate on the lock so you can be sure it will fit on the width of your door stile and clear the door stop. Spindle allows for a door thickness of 1” to 1-7/8”. If you intend to use this set for a screen door you will need to allow 2-1/2” between the screen and entry door so the doorknob won’t hit the door.
