These bin pulls are quite rare and unusual – sure to be a conversation piece!
They were patented on Jan. 8, 1872 by Albert D. Judd of New Haven, Connecticut. The Judd family operated a hardware manufacturing company under various names (M & O.S. Judd - 1833, M. Judd & Company - 1853, Judd Manufacturing - 1865) from 1833 to 1897. At various points during that time Albert Judd was a principal in the company so these pulls were undoubtedly manufactured by Judd Manufacturing.
An interesting note is that the patent does not indicate gender for the design. The patent is for simply “a head” and the associated drawing is quite vague. My vote would be for a statesman or other important male dignitary because I clearly see the pigtail queue (short little ponytail) which is not a hair style that a woman would have during that time in history. You will receive a copy of the patent with your purchase and you can make your own decision :o)
The pulls are in excellent condition and the details are clear and crisp. There are bits of the original bronze plating and varnish still visible.
Pulls are sold individually. The price shown is for one pull.
4-1/8” x 1-3/4” (widest dimension)
