This solid bronze set is a superb example of artistic hardware created in the 1870’s. The ornate geometrics are beautiful with tulips on the tops but the owl heads on the sides really make them quite rare. I’ve included a close up of one owl and all are just as clear with no wear to the incising. The white porcelain knobs that were paired with ornate bronze hardware were a higher quality than that used for more utilitarian applications. They do not develop age spots because the porcelain was more refined. The knobs were more bulbous and the shafts were bronze rather than cast iron to match the door plates.
This set is in excellent condition. The only wear I note on the plates is a bit on one doorknob collar which does not affect its function and it is not visible behind the doorknob. The white porcelain has minor scratching which is typical for this age. One knob has some slight darkening along one edge but if installed with it facing down it would not be seen. The bronze has been polished and is currently gaining patina again.
