Unusual metal openwork and subtle detail make these antique screen door hinges a real eye catcher! And you’ll appreciate these spring loaded hinges when you’re bringing things in and out. With the door fully open they will hold the door open and then close it with a gentle nudge!
When I received these hinges they were so covered with old paint that the openwork was barely visible. I had to soak them in a can of Aircraft paint remover 3 times before it and the original black paint was all removed! They were then soaked in vinegar to remove the rust and brushed thoroughly. Painting required a bit of effort since some parts are only accessible when the hinges are in the open position. That means painting twice for the bottoms and twice for the tops for each coat. I started with a primer to prohibit any future rust and as a base for the next step. Finally the tops were given 3 coats and the bottoms 2 coats of high quality automotive lacquer. They are now ready for another 150 years of use! Please don’t tell me if you happen to get any white paint on them :o)
Measuring the overall square base they are 2-3/4” wide x 2-1/2” high
