These stunning hinges are true works of art!  During the Victorian era homeowners were enthralled with all things with an Egyptian, Persian or Chinese decorative motif.  On the side showing when the door is open there is an Egyptian style urn with a single leafed stalk and a drooping flower bud.  On the reverse side, visible when the door is closed, is a smaller version of the design with the flower bud straight up.  Was that one watered?  :o)  Both have an ornate background field pattern.  Be sure to click on the Larger Image so you don’t miss any of this fantastic metal artistry!

These hinges were made by Norwalk around 1888 and are intended to be installed so that the designs on the backs are visible when the door is closed.  Since antique hinges are far heavier than modern hinges, they are installed with two hinges per door.

The hinges have been lightly cleaned and could be shined up more if you desire to do so.  These hinges are the “lift off” type for a right hand door.  They can be used for a left hand door but would not lift off. To remove the door, you would need to unscrew the hinges from the door or jamb.
