These antique doorknobs and rosettes were made by Russell & Erwin and referenced as their Lava line. They are shown in their 1876 hardware catalog as the Gothic pattern and were created to compliment hardwoods with a color choice of black, brown and buff. They are made of gutta purcha (a mixture of resins from Malaysian trees) which was one of the first plastics used for manufacture of items such as daguerreotype cases, toilet articles, picture frames and, in this case, doorknobs in the nineteenth century. Very few of these doorknob sets exist today and I was fortunate to obtain two sets.
There are two patents associated with these sets (marked on the back of rosettes). The first was Oct. 19, 1869 which was for the construction of the rosettes with their metal interior. The second was Nov. 2, 1869 which was for the design pattern embossed on the knobs and rosettes. Based upon that patent date, together with the catalog reference, these sets would have been manufactured between 1869 and 1876. I will include copies of both patents and the antique hardware catalog pages with purchase.
Both sets are in the Brown color choice and I’ve referenced the photos A and B to show both sets. There has been some damage as noted in the photos but they could be mounted to minimize visibility or just show it off with aplomb! Although the rosettes show two cracks (Set B) and a broken piece (Set A) they are still secure to the metal interior. Set A has the original “as found” shiny finish with a bit of wear to the knob tops. Set B was dull and given a paste wax coating. Please indicate which set you choose in the Comments section at checkout.
Both include the original spindles and set screws. If you would indicate the thickness of your door (also at checkout) I can replace the spindle if it turns out to be the wrong length.
Knob diameter 2-3/8”
Rosette diameter 2-1/4”
