Although these massive rim (or box) locks were made for entry doors they are equally at home on an interior door. This lock is in exceptional original condition and bears a patent date of Dec. 17, 1856 on one side. Strangely the patent date lettering shows up better in person than in the photo. The keeper (catch) was not found with the lock but matches well and, more importantly, works with it.

This lock can be mounted with either side against the door but the side without the patent date has more visible paint loss. Not bad for about 150 years old!  That side also has a tiny casting flaw hole next to the doorknob cam. There is a little finger lock on the top of the lock for privacy. It keeps the doorknobs from turning which effectively locks the door. The strike is not beveled (which was common on locks of this age) and does not retract by itself when the door is closed against the keeper. The door is closed by turning the doorknob just like when it is being opened.

The interior of the lock is in good working condition and has been oiled. The springs are still strong and the deadbolt is functional. I do not have a skeleton key but guarantee the deadbolt works.

Lock:  4” high x 6” wide x 3/4” thick
Keeper (or catch) is 7/8” wide
