Many people are trying to restore their 1930s - 1940s homes but are encountering a front door that has been drilled for a modern lock set with that big ugly hole. This set allows you to have the authenticity without a lot of major wood work with the door.
With the pieces provided the outside door plate will completely cover the 2-1/8 filled hole and using the tube latch the keyhole openings would be just for decoration. On the inside you would need to place a thin circular piece of wood behind the rosette and paint or stain it to match your door. Go to
FAQ on how to fill in the old hole. A keyhole cover is provided for decorative purposes. Where the keyhole openings are (both inside and out) you paint the door black or just gouge a bit of wood out so it looks authentic. For security a separate modern deadbolt would be installed.
When ordering this set please give me the ultimate thickness of the door so I can provide a spindle that is long enough. Put that information in the Comments section at checkout.All pieces are made of steel with patina except the separate keyhole cover, which is nickel. The outside door plate has some fine pitting from previous rust but it is so evenly distributed it almost appears stock. You can polish more if you wish and when you get the color you like it would be best to give the pieces a lacquer clear coat to protect them from rust. This set would also be a good candidate for re-plating brass, bronze, copper or nickel. The lower keyhole on the exterior plate has been enlarged sometime in the past which only adds to authenticity.
The tube latch operates perfectly. The face plate is brass plated with some scrapes. You can pick up a strike plate at any hardware store to go with it.
