Rare and beautiful is a winning combination for the front of your majestic home! These doorbell pulls are very scarce and to find white porcelain in such perfect condition is astonishing since these pieces are frequently broken over time. Not to be outdone the 1889 Sargent & Co. bell for inside the house has a fancy rounded picketing on the base and a mellow nickel plated dome. A pull on the outside knob produces a melodic “gong” inside the house.
I’ve included a photo of how these pulls are installed for your reference. This pull must be installed through a wall. It will not work through a door. The rosette consists of two parts. The metal threaded part screws into the wood of the house and holds the rosette flush. The knob is pulled to cause the bell to ring and the bell spring pulls the knob back in place. If you choose to install the knob as shown in the lower example you might need an additional spring around the square spindle of the pull.
The porcelain is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks. The knob has a couple of light age spots as is standard for white antique porcelain. The knob is firmly attached to the shaft. The bronze portions have been polished. The bell is in excellent condition as well. It has been cleaned/polished and operates perfectly with a strong spring. The dome is nickel plated which has turned a mellow golden hue rather than bright silver. There is a slight crack in the nickel by the acorn nut – might be a manufacturing flaw or perhaps a stress crack. It doesn’t go through the bell and is much less noticeable “in person”.
