Antique Cast Iron Letter Slot with Interior Plate

These antique mail slots were purchased with and without interior plates so it is hard to find a set such as this. The Eastlake details are fantastic with flowers, leaves and geometrics. Made by Sargent & Co. around the turn of the century (1800/1900) both pieces are in excellent condition. The blush of bronze plating remains on most the high areas and there is very little loss of the original black background enamel. The spring on the back keeps the flap closed tightly.

I have not oiled this piece in case you would want to replace any of the black background paint. If exposed to the weather and humidity you will need to protect the cast iron from rusting. Linseed oil or clear lacquer works well – don’t forget the back!  

Steel antique slotted screws that have never been used are included but not pictured.

Exterior piece:  2-5/16” x 7-3/8” overall. Opening is 1-1/16” x 4-1/2” oval (inside area)
Interior piece: 2-1/4” x 6-3/4” overall. Opening is 1-1/16” x 4-1/2”
